Acute Renal Failure on Morkie Canine Treated with Laser Therapy

Canine, 9 y/o, FS, Morkie, "Bella Bear"

History
Bella Bear has a history of lymphangiectasia and inflammatory bowel disease leading to protein-losing enteropathy. During a relapse that led to an increase in her prednisone dose she developed a stomach ulcer and presumptive pancreatitis.

Diagnostics and Exam Findings
Her renal values spiked with her Creatinine at 3.0 mg/dL and Phosphorus at >16.1 mg/dL with extreme lethargy and anorexia. Her lab values improved minimally while on IV fluid therapy but then climbed again when taken off. Quality of life discussions were started then laser therapy was initiated. After one week her Creatinine was 1.8 mg/dL. Two weeks after starting treatment her Creatinine and Phosphorus were in the normal range at 1.6 mg/dL and 5.0 mg/dL respectively. Her values have continued to be in the normal range.

Laser Treatment Details
The Urinary Tract Disorder Protocol using 960 joules at 8W was applied on contact,
repeated once and applied over the right cranial abdomen, right side, left caudal abdomen, and left side.

Frequency of Treatment
Three times weekly for two weeks, then two times weekly for one week. Currently maintained with once weekly treatments.

Other Treatments
IV fluids were given initially then changed to subcutaneous fluids until her Creatinine had reached the normal range. Current medications are Naraquin Renal Support, omeprazole, mycophenolate, and prednisone (tapering).

Comments
Bella Bear is currently doing wonderfully at home with a great appetite, happy attitude and no ill effects. Bella Bear’s owners could not be more thrilled to have their precious baby healthy and happy.
