Post-Surgical Recovery on Miniature Dachshund with Laser Therapy

Signalment:  11 year old, F/S, Miniature Dachshund

Presentation:  Chronic intermittent bilateral hind limb lameness of 1 year duration.  Diagnosed with bilateral grade III medial patellar luxation, partial CCL tear on left rear leg as well.

Surgery:  Surgery to repair MPL’s– enbloc trochleoplasty, tibial tuberosity transposition, medial desmotomy, lateral imbrication.

Treatment Details:  8W of CW for 3 minutes, 30 seconds (1680 Total Joules) to each stifle, three total treatments (immediately post-op, days 1&2 after surgery).  Other pain medication:  hydromophone 0.1mg/kg q 4 hours during first 24 hours; cryotherapy to both stifles q 4 hours.

Treatment Results:  “Typically dogs that do not have laser do not start walking until day 5-7 post operation.  Animals that receive 3-4 preoperative laser treatments walk day 2 post operation.” – Dr. Kelly Gellasch
