Author(s): "Dr. Kyle German, Farmer’s Korner Veterinary Hospital, Breckenridge, CO"
Signalment: Canine, 2 years old, F/S, Pit bull mix, “Nala”.
History: The patient had a c-section at another hospital 12 days prior to initial presentation with her 3 young puppies for a general exam. She came back in one week later when it was determined that a thermal burn was the cause of the scabs, possibly from the use of a heating pad, etc. during c-section surgery. That day she was sedated for debridement of wounds. Pain medication and antibiotics were started.
Diagnosis and Exam Findings: Large scabs and crusts from thermal burn along the dorsum beginning just caudal to the base of the skull through thoracolumbar region. 3 healthy puppies. Heartworm negative.
Laser Treatment: The preset “Wound” protocol was followed, utilizing a non-contact technique to deliver a dosage of 5 J/cm².
Frequency of Treatments: A total of 18 total laser sessions were done. Initially occurring every 2-3 days with bandage changes, then decreased after 7-8 weeks to twice a week with bandage changes.
Other Treatments: Pain management and antibiotics (tramadol and Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid). Traumeel injections were given at all debridement dates (presentation, day 3, day 5, and day 8). On those days, patient was sedated and dead tissue removed until all remaining tissue was determined to be viable. Bandages with silver sulfadiazine dressings were applied accordingly.
Comments: NSAID’s were avoided at initial presentation for wound due to concerns with nursing puppies, however the patient was comfortable throughout process with laser therapy.
