The utilization of cannabis for veterinary therapies has been of great debate since the first U.S. states passed its legalization approximately 5 years ago for medicinal use in humans. It has been reported to provide relief to veterinary patients suffering from conditions including epilepsy, arthritis and cancer. However, very little scientific research has supported such claims, leaving it to be up to great debate for its use in four-legged patients. Within the past year, there has been an increase in demand to better understand cannabis’ utility, safety and efficacy due to the increased number of states legalizing the substance for humans and the growing availability of cannabis derivatives, including CBD oil, to pet owners. The growing popularity and acceptance of cannabis products has led to a strong push from the veterinary community to explore the safety and efficacy claims of these products, resulting in several ground-breaking studies currently taking place in the U.S.
